Dylan Groenewegen’s crash spoils chances of hat-trick in Norway

Dylan Groenewegen crashed today in the fifth and final stage of the Tour of Norway and left LottoNL-Jumbo unable to win its third stage with the Dutch sprinter. Edvald Boasson Hagen won the bunch kick and the overall. In the second to last lap in the city, a rider fell right in front of Groenewegen and took the Dutch champion down. Amund Grondahl Jansen led LottoNL-Jumbo into Oslo for eighth.

“We knew it would be a bunch sprint with a difficult final,” Sports Director Nico Verhoeven said. “With such a difficult final, you have to see how many of our riders could ride the sprint in the final. “The crash of Groenewegen was caused by a rider who hit the fences and Dylan was unable to manoeuvre around him. Because of the crash the team missed a good opportunity to compete for the win today.” The sprinter from Abcoude already had won the second and fourth stages.

He fell on his hand and arm. Verhoeven could not say how bad his injuries were. “It is unclear how bad his injuries are,” Verhoeven said. “If Dylan still suffers from it tomorrow we will have him checked out in the hospital.”
