Team LottoNL-Jumbo misses out in Ghent-Wevelgem

Team LottoNL-Jumbo failed to join the mix for victory in Belgium’s Gent-Wevelgem today. After a crash involving Tom Leezer and Lars Boom, the peloton split and left the Dutch WorldTour team behind. Leezer ended his day in the hospital. A scan revealed that he fractured his pelvis. He should be sidelined for at least four weeks.

"We just can’t go with the very best, but behind that, we must earn our place," said Sports Director Jan Boven. "Boom suffered from the crash where Leezer was involved. Dylan didn’t have the same legs like he had Wednesday. Before the crash we had four riders in the first group."

Greg Van Avermaet won the race in a two-up sprint with Jens Keukeleire. In the first group behind, Jos van Emden and Bram Tankink finished.

"You have to do with that result today,” Boven added.

"Lars has to improve, so he needed this race. Today, he rode in the right places at the crucial moments. That's a good sign, but we need to go further. Next week, we have another race.”

Boom and Groenewegen

"We had a great position on the last time up the Baneberg climb and that is positive because my shape is better," said Boom. "This week, I’ll rest well and preview the Flanders course. It must be much better for me. I need to live for it and hope that it gets better."

"I look back with satisfaction on Wednesday in Dwars, but today, I did not have great legs and I missed some sharpness,” Groenewegen said. “At one point, I was riding behind, then you’re lost in this field of competitors."
