Combative Bennett fourth in Tour of Poland
George Bennett has finished fourth in the Tour of Poland. The 28-year-old leader of Team LottoNL-Jumbo left a strong impression in the final stage. He attacked several times, but could not prevent himself from dropping a place in the general classification. In the stage, the rider from New Zealand finished fifth.
In the final stage in and around Bukowina Tatrzańska, Team LottoNL-Jumbo rode aggressively, just like the rest of the week. Tom Leezer was part of the early breakaway, after which Enrico Battaglin and Floris De Tier successfully launched their leader Bennett for his attacks on the penultimate and the final ascent.
“It’s a pity that we were unable to secure a podium today”, sports director Grischa Niermann said. “But with more explosive riders like Pinot you know that this chance isn’t big. Especially with time bonuses at the finish. Now we have mixed feelings. All in all it was a successful Tour of Poland, also with a view towards the Vuelta. George rode very offensively and showed that he was the strongest climber in the race. The team was strong and showed themselves well all week. They have done everything they could. I’m proud on the team. This gives confidence regarding the upcoming races.”
