Olivier impresses in first stage Tour of Utah

Daan Olivier impressed in the first stage of the Tour of Utah. The 25-year-old Dutchman was part of an early breakaway. With fifty kilometers from the finish line he went on a solo adventure, after which he was taken back in the last fifteen kilometers of the stage to Cedar City. After a late attempt of Neilson Powless was neutralised, the stage ended up in a bunch sprint. Koen Bouwman finished ninth. In the general classification nothing changes. Neilson Powless remains fourth, Pascal Eenkhoorn fifth. Olivier does not stay empty-handed. He is the new leader in the mountain classification. Powless remains leader in the best young rider competition.

"I felt good and I was very motivated.", said Olivier who looked back at the stage with satisfaction. "Today I showed what I am capable off. Especially after all my injuries. I have worked really hard for it and it is nice to be rewarded with the mountain jersey. On the first climb I felt that I was by far the best of the leading group but I got surprised. On the second climb I attacked and nobody could follow. Over the top I still had a lead of over two minutes and even a stage win was possible. But in the descent there was full headwind and then you know that it is going to be difficult. But I'm glad with my performance and I'm going to try to defend my jersey and help the team as much as possible. "
