Van Poppel sixth in the Vuelta a España's stage ten

Danny van Poppel sprinted to sixth place in the tenth stage of the Vuelta a España today. The sprint train of Team LottoNL-Jumbo raced at the front but was edged out as the line approached and Van Poppel had to come from too far.

The stage was characterised by the traditional early breakaway that was brought back in the final. In the peloton, Team LottoNL-Jumbo was well-positioned all day. George Bennett was attentive and took one bonification second. He sits 10th overall at 47 seconds behind race leader Simon Yates. Steven Kruijswijk remains ninth.

"The team did a great job today, but we got pushed away," Van Poppel said. "Then it was over for me to sprint for the victory. I felt good and I think I still did a good sprint coming from behind. My form is good, but everything has to fall into place. The team and I have a lot of confidence in that."

Tomorrow's stage features much climbing. Sports Director Addy Engels expects a very nervous day.

"Tomorrow is an excellent opportunity for the breakaway," Engels explained. "There is a lot of climbing and dangerous and narrow roads. We have to be very attentive, riding in the front in order to not get surprised."
